Thanks for pointing out NT Wright's interpretation. I checked the Greek dictionary and, indeed, it means exactly what NTW teaches. Romans 8:28 is a verse to encourage Christians to interact with all circumstances in collaboration with and help from God for the good of others and the will of God. Thank you for alerting us to this important distinction!

This verse has been misused and overused in comforting the hurting and the grieving. I have heard someone said, "If I hear Romans 8:28 quoted one more time in my grief, I'll throw up."
